Naming is located between Rembau, Negeri Sembilan and near to Taboh. The villagers at Naning are depending on their proceeds such as paddy, fruits, betel and tin that make British prompted to get Naning. According to the History, Naning have been colonized by the British around the year 1832 and have been governed by Dutch since the year 1757 until 1824.

Taboh Naning Mosque

The existence of Naning has started in the 13th century where according to the villagers; the origin of Naning is centered on yellow wasps and “tabuh” or “beduk” which is one of the tools that hammered during the time for prayer or death. During that century, Naning had been explored by Datuk Pepatih Nan Sebatang from the Minangkabau, Sumatra which also included a group of local people and has opened a new settlement in Bukit Penyalang. Before they reached to Bukit Penyalang or one time before has known as Bukit Bisu, the entourage of Pepatih Nan Sebatang that also a founder of Pepatih custom have discovered three islands aligned. At the island, they have found yellow wasp nest that very poisonous or known as naming and a “tabuh”. There have something strange happened where the “tabuh” have make sound by itself on every Friday evening and if there have something bad happened in that area. Until now, Naning still exists and its administration centered at Taboh.

He had strive to defend Naning from be taken by British. The reason why he called as the great Malay warriors is because he has possessed nature confinement die before death. Since small, he had learnt self-defense or martial arts since he is 6 years old. Even though he is from the poor family, but he always tried his best to put himself, religion and race in the top. He also very respect towards his parents, so that’s why many people on that time are really respect him and put their trust in Dol Said.

THE REVIVAL OF DOL SAID

Pukulan Naning

Dol Said is a one of the greet Malay’s warrior on that time. He is tried his best to protect Malaya from being taken by the terrorist especially Naning. As what had been mentioned before, he has been elected as the ninth Naning’s Headman after Penghulu Anjak died on 1799. Dol Said defiantly opposed the imposition of tax on Naning by British where they need to pay about 400 bushels of rice when they are disobeyed to pay 10% from their crop yields. Other than that, British also had introduced headman rules that undermine his power. This rule has prohibited Dol Said to involve in criminal cases and on 1828 Dol Said had been warned by British because he had solve the criminal cases that happened in Naning.

This picture shows that when
British want to attacked Naning

Actually, there have another reason why Dol Said had tried his best to Protect Naning from British. This is because he wants to defend the independence of Naning and does not want his state to be one of the place that being influenced under the colonizer. Furthermore, the 'ultimate cause' why Naning War happened is because of the status in the eyes of the East India Company where they saw Naning as a vassal province whose ruler owed his appointment and authority to them since it have the prove in the Dutch treaty 1641 and the British one of 1801 even though the rule is saw different for Malay and Minangkabau people. However, Datuk Dol Said managed to outsmart the invading forces with the help of his nearby allies.

Unfortunately, in 1832, the British has come back to Naning and launch the second attack or war on Naning with a much larger force than the first attacked. British already made a better preparation in order to make sure that they can have Naning as their colony and evict Dol Said from Naning. Dol Said has tried his best to defend Naning, but at the end he surrender on 1834. Even though British has get Naning as their colony, but they had suffered huge lost and many of their soldiers died during the war.

the warrior of Naning, but he also has
been claimed as the warrior of Malacca.

On 1824, British and Netherlands had sign the treaty between them. According to this treaty, Malacca has been passed to British and British had claimed that Naning is one part of Malacca. This situation had make British make a new rules where Naning need to follow the rules that have been used in Malacca. However, Dol Said and the villagers cannot accept this situation. This is how Dol Said rise up and fight for Naning because he feels that Naning is not part of Malacca.

He is tried hard to oppose the entry of British troops in Naning to show the wisdom of war had defeated the British in two military campaigns. War that had happened on 1834 had make Dol Said as the brave warrior in Malacca. HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS NANING

The map of Naning

Previously, Naning was a part of Negeri Sembilan but after that it was later annexed by British into Malacca via Naning war that happened on 1831 where Malacca at that time was under British rule. Dol Said have tried his best to defend Naning from being the part under British rule because before this British had managed to devide the unity of the Malay during that time by binding agreements with counties bordering Naning including Rembau, Sungai Ujung and Seri Menanti. However, Dol Said had tried his best to defend the independence of Naning even though at last, Naning has fall into British rule. Dol Said had to retreat to Pasir Besar when had defeated in Naning’s second war on February 1832.

Naning was defeated not because it lacks with strategies, but it is because Rembau has told British about the weakness of Naning where it only can be defeated by scattering the pig’s bones and dogs at the Naning’s border area. Now Naning had been placed under Straits Settlements regulation on 27 October 1832. As the lessons, Malays should unite to achieve glory in their life.
